The organizational talent with a penchant for the wild nature
Christoph Deiters is a city dweller with a love of wild gardens. He likes atmospheric pictures, good food and the lake. The best place for the architect and co-owner of Nightnurse to relax is on a desert island without running water.
What career stages have you had?
I have the classic background of a thoroughbred architect: Studies at ETH Zurich and EPFL in Lausanne, with various internships in architecture firms in Switzerland and Berlin in between. I then entered real architectural life as a project architect and project manager at Peter Moor Architekten. There I supervised several competitions and smaller projects and ultimately oversaw a medium-sized conversion from the preliminary project to completion. That was basically my baptism of fire! But it wasn't long before I felt the urge to take pictures, and I founded Nightnurse together with Christopher Saller and Lutz Kögler.
What is your personal superpower - and how do you use it?
My greatest strength is always keeping an overview, even when my head is full of work and under water. This "superpower" helps me with projects, but also with the company as a whole. Because I enjoy a lot of things and I love variety. Maybe that's why I work in so many different areas at our company: from management and finance to consulting, project management and visualization
What brought you to Nightnurse?
The pictures! Even during my studies, the design methodology in Miroslav Šik's department really appealed to me: We always started the design with an image, or rather a mood. I love how images can convey moods and have an effect on people. I also like being involved in so many exciting projects at Nightnurse, some of which I can influence. Most of the projects last less than a month. So every project is a step up: you gain experience and can do even better than the last one!
Which spaces or places fascinate you in particular and why?
I grew up in Geneva and Berlin and like larger cities. Nevertheless, I also love nature and landscapes. What I like most are beautifully designed gardens, even wild ones. In combination with atmospheric architecture and expressive materials such as brick, wood and concrete, such gardens take on a very special charm. When buildings are located in a forest or by a lake, the most beautiful moods are created. Maybe that's why I'm so taken with Scandinavian architecture.
What is the most beautiful thing that has ever been visualized?
I love the colorful and extremely atmospheric paintings by William Turner. On the other hand, I also love the dramatic and expressive skyscraper drawings by Hugh Ferris - although they are much more sombre in comparison. I really like the use of light and shadow in both works.
What do you love doing, when you're not working as a Nightnurse?
I enjoy spending time with my family or can often be found on the rowing boat or jogging. Once a year, I treat myself to a longer break and go to our vacation home near Berlin. We call it "The Island". It's in the middle of nature and doesn't even have running water. I love swimming in the lake in the morning, rowing, windsurfing and making a fire on the shore. It's wellness for body and soul and for me it's the ideal balance to working at the computer!
