The architect who was once a carpenter
Christopher Saller has always allowed his talents and passions to guide him throughout his life. They led the current co-owner and founding member of Nightnurse from the carpenter's workshop to the architect's office - and sometimes even to the golf course.
What career stages have you had?
My career is probably not so typical for an architect. I did a carpentry apprenticeship after leaving school. I was immediately fascinated by the combination of materials, construction, art and computer-aided design. My personal highlight: I won the ideas competition for furniture and was able to build my first rocking chair! Design and architecture impressed me so much that I then did an internship in mechanical engineering, started studying architecture in Munich and completed it at ETH Zurich. I then worked as a project architect at Wild Bär Heule before founding the company Nightnurse with Christoph Deiters and Lutz Kögler in 2010.
What is your personal superpower - and how do you use it?
My gut and instinct work like my spider sense. They are my ever-reliable companions.
What brought you to Nightnurse?
When I was working as an architect after graduating, I was missing something. Designing and developing ideas in three-dimensional space and directly on the image was something I missed out on in my day-to-day work as an architect. A lot of administrative procedures and paragraphs take up too much space. Developing an idea on the image and then working it out in depth has always appealed to me. Miroslav Šik's teaching has had a strong influence on me.
Which spaces or places fascinate you in particular and why?
I grew up in the countryside, but I feel at home in the city. I need beautifully designed spaces and architecture around me. I like the quiet, dark forest green just as much as the colorful, noisy city. Hiking on Scotland's islands, exploring New York's street grid, or tangoing on the streets of Buenos Aires - wonderful!
What is the most beautiful thing that has ever been visualized?
I appreciate the napkin sketch, the immediate capture of a moment or thought. But of course also everything that visualizes the holodeck from Star Trek!
What do you love doing, when you're not working as a Nightnurse?
Well, I'm dad to a 5-year-old son, need I say more? During the vacations, I go grandparent hopping with my family between Portugal and Bavaria. Otherwise, I cycle to work every day, go jogging even in bad weather and consistently visit a golf course three times a year (and no more!). Information about my handicap is only given in person.
