Uznach Bypass
Making complex topics understandable
The municipality of Uznach is crossed every day by more than 16,000 vehicles. Traffic congestion as well as noise and air pollution shape everyday life in the town center and noticeably affect the quality of life and living conditions.
As a possible relief measure, the regional connector road A15–Gaster was proposed. The approximately six-kilometer bypass would have routed traffic around the built-up area of Uznach, but would also have required interventions in existing natural and landscape areas.
We worked closely with the team that critically assessed the project, particularly with regard to its potential impacts on the landscape, biodiversity, and the lives of local residents.
Our goal was to present this perspective in a way that was easy to understand and to make their arguments visually tangible. Through clear and atmospheric visualizations, the ecological, spatial, and emotional aspects of the project became more accessible.
This provided the public with an additional basis for forming their own opinion and making an informed decision.

Strategy
The implementation was particularly complex because official planning documents were only available to a limited extent. Based on published PDFs, screenshots, and independent research, the necessary information had to be reconstructed.
At the same time, it was important to consider different perspectives, translate the client’s requirements both conceptually and creatively, and evaluate multiple viewpoints in order to define the most effective visual standpoint.
Project Complexity
The central idea behind the visualization was to clearly illustrate how the planned road would intervene in the existing landscape and what effects it could have on both residents and the natural environment. The route alignment, junction areas, open spaces, and the spatial proportions of the infrastructure were carefully considered in order to make its impact on the environment, traffic, and everyday life visible.
Our visualizations made the scale of the planned road and its impact directly perceptible, clearly illustrating the consequences for nature, the landscape, and quality of life. They supported informed opinion-forming, encouraged discussion, and made the implications for the municipality, the environment, and everyday life tangible.
In this way, the project became easier to grasp, and the significance of each spatial, ecological, and social decision became transparent.
