E-Bike City
E-Bike City is a research project by ETH Zurich’s Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering. Seven professorships explored how a city could prioritize cycling, micromobility and public transport while reorganizing private motor traffic.
We translated this mobility vision into visualizations and animations of four locations in Zurich. The challenge was to make the proposed traffic layouts understandable from different perspectives. Our images show what reallocating street space would mean in everyday life for people cycling, walking and driving.

Four places, different perspectives
Albisriederplatz, Baslerstrasse, Langmauerstrasse and Winterthurerstrasse provide the setting for the vision. Drawing on the existing streets and the research team’s proposals, we developed views from the perspectives of cyclists, pedestrians and drivers. Each view shows how the proposed traffic layout would look to the people using it.
A vision in familiar surroundings
We combined photographs of the existing locations with 3D renderings of the redesigned streets. Buildings and surroundings remain recognizable, while new cycle routes and adjusted traffic lanes appear within the familiar setting. Before-and-after comparisons make the changes directly visible.
Traffic layouts in detail
Traffic lights, signs and road markings explain how the proposed streets would be used. We developed these elements in detail within the 3D scenes. The images show where routes cross, how traffic spaces are separated and how much room each mode of transport receives.
A shared basis for discussion
The visualizations complement the scientific studies with concrete views of the proposed spaces. They show how the proposals could change familiar city streets, giving researchers, policymakers and the public a shared basis for discussing how street space should be allocated.
