A subproject on the largest industrial wasteland in Switzerland
Located between Riedholz and Luterbach along the Aare river, the Attisholzareal is Switzerland's largest industrial wasteland undergoing transformation. The project merges old and new, using the historic Kocherei building as a backbone and adding new structures inspired by the game Jenga. The design allows for a continuous spatial experience from the urban ground floor to the natural rooftop garden, maintaining the historical building's identity.
The visualization concept required integrating the large volume of new buildings without them appearing too heavy. SSM Architects emphasized showcasing the industrial character of the neighborhood while using materials with patina and design elements like graffiti for the new structures. Capturing the vibrant life of the area while balancing privacy and openness was essential. Due to limited surrounding photography, we created a hybrid visual language combining environment and photo collage, honoring both the industrial history and dynamic future of the area.
The project required a deep understanding of existing architecture and its integration into the new urban fabric. We chose perspectives that advantageously presented the new architectural elements harmoniously with the industrial ambiance. Renderings were enhanced with Photoshop to add elements like patina, dirt, and graffiti, making the new buildings appear authentic in their surroundings. Combining elements from existing photos and renderings resulted in a hybrid presentation, capturing both realistic and abstract components. The idyllic renderings skillfully express the site's historical substance while conveying the area's revitalization.
